Tibetan Shamanistic Rituals in Lake QinghaiThe vast Lake Qinghia, near the border of China and Tibet, has enormous religious significance for the people living in the region. For one month each year, thousands of pilgrims make their way from some of the highest mountains in Tibet to perform ceremonies to appease the lake spirits, who are known to be particularly angry. The character of the rituals changes according to the zodiac; these photos show the ceremonies of the Year of the Sheep. These traditions are some of the oldest in the world.Throughout the world, those who practice shamanism must do so at odds with both government and other religions. By contrast, shamans in China's Qinghai Province are chosen by local authorities and approved by Buddhist lamas. |
