Enktoya, Female Shaman in Northen Mongolia

These photographs were taken in the vast mountains in Northern Mongolia/ Southern Siberia over a two-year period. Enktoya, a Shaman, represents the most recent wave of female shamans born during the Communist era. At that time, to avoid massacre, most of the shamanistic knowledge was past from the men to the women.

The process of learning to communicate with the spirits through nature is a lonely and difficult time for the Shaman. Each shaman has his or her own particular spirits to call upon as aides to cure illness and predict the future, as well as a personal way of communicating with the spirits. Some things remain constant. Spirits always come in the dark of night, from mountains, the skies or other mysterious faraway places. The Shaman always wears a sacred cloak and beats a special drum order to convene the spirits.
